Position Statement: Mental Health First Aid Education

From September 8-12th, NAPSA Board member James Buckley, and Queensland pharmacy students William Hagan, Allison Cooper and Alistair Meldrum were given the opportunity to attend the Australian Friendly Societies Pharmacy Association (AFSPA)'s Annual Conference held this year in Hobart.

Through the newly established agreement between the two organisations, NAPSA would firstly like to thank AFSPA for the opportunity to attend their annual conference and for the ongoing enthusiasm and support for pharmacy students that every member and delegate at the conference showed towards the students.

"Friendly society pharmacies are a select few of non-for-profit pharmacies that have been providing exceptional service to Australians for well over 100 years. I can't thank the AFSPA especially Claire for putting all this together and letting Will, James, Alli and myself to take part in the education sessions focusing on enhancing customer service, enhancing professional standards and helping cement friendly society pharmacies in future Australia", stated Alistair.

This was a fantastic opportunity for pharmacy students to gain a different perspective of the pharmacy industry. Friendly Societies pharmacies operate through a different managing and business model than other pharmacy model in Australia and bring diversity to the industry.

Upon the completion of the conference, Alli stated, "As up and coming early career pharmacists, many attendees of the conference were eager to both share their knowledge and experiences with us and to also hear our point of views".

Highlights of the conference included key industry guest speakers, question and answer sessions on topics such as the discussion paper on the pharmacy remuneration and regulation paper, social media do's and don'ts, stories from local Tasmanian entrepreneurs and the annual attendees dinner.

Will said, "I was also able to make new contacts with people from all over Australia as we were able to interact with sponsors of the conference. I really value these new connections as they were all more than happy to give us students as much advice and guidance as we wanted."

NAPSA is very happy to continue and develop their professional relationship with AFSPA and look forward to working with them in the future and attending future annual conferences.
